The Miyagi House Artist Residency is a self-guided residency designed for artists, photographers, writers, and other creatives seeking solitude, inspiration, and an immersive experience of everyday life in Japan. For $300 per week, residents stay in a clean, remodeled Showa-era house in Tateyama, a charming seaside town on the southern Bōsō Peninsula.

Days are yours to shape. Spend uninterrupted time working in the studio, walk or bicycle to the coast, photograph the landscape and local architecture, or explore Tateyama and the surrounding countryside. The area offers beaches, fishing harbors, temples and shrines, historic sites, traditional neighborhoods, and views across Tokyo Bay toward Mt. Fuji on clear days.

This is intentionally a self-guided residency, giving you the freedom to establish your own rhythm rather than follow a structured program. For residents who want to connect more deeply with the area, we can provide introductions to local tour guides and other creatives who can help you plan an immersive cultural and creative experience.

Residencies are available January through mid-March, when Tateyama is quieter and less visited. Winters are relatively mild for Japan: daytime temperatures typically reach around 50–55°F, with nights often around 35–43°F. The house is heated, making it a comfortable winter base for working, reading, reflecting, and exploring.
